Apples

Apple diseases are best controlled before they appear. So it’s best to have an early-season apple disease management plan. This doesn’t need to be complicated. All you need are the basics: 1. What kind of trees do you have? 2. Did they show signs of disease last season? 3. Have you treated in the past? 4. What diseases are your trees most likely to develop? Asking yourself these kinds of questions will lead you in the right direction to manage your fruit trees and prevent many types of diseases. Remember as grandma used to say, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” In this case, it means select disease resistant trees.

For the 2011 growing season we recommend:

To control Apple Scab, Powdery Mildew, and Rust Diseases try:

Bonide™ Tree Fruit Spray or Spectracide Immunox™

There are many fungicides out there made by different companies that will get the job done.
For good control of all three try Immunox™ and supplement with captan to achieve the highest level of disease control for a home orchardist.

BEWARE that you don’t get a formulation that contains insecticides as well. Applying a product like that while trees are in bloom will harm beneficial pollinating insects that you need to produce healthy fruits.
